Baristas who call it Xpresso make me sad...

Man, me too. I worked in a "fine dining" restaurant for a while and Elizabeth, one of our waitresses always offered our patrons eXpresso at the end of their meals. I tried to keep quiet but eventually I couldn't take it anymore. I struggle not to correct people (as I do it far to frequently and to a fault), but half the time I was a manager there and it truly bothered me that she was doing it.

Finally, I asked her "Are you aware that it's not called espresso?"

"I know, I know," she said. "Espresso. I just like saying that way."

I couldn't decide if I was bothered more or less at finding out that she was mispronouncing it deliberately and not ignorantly. I reeled for a second or too before saying "Fair enough. Good night El-eye-zabeth."

There were several staff members I never heard pronounce her name correctly again after hearing me call her that. I guess in the end we just liked saying it that way.

...and no, the irony is not lost on me that I typed "to" when I should have typed "too" in the story above, in which I boast about correcting someone for a usage error. Detecting the irony, unfortunately, does nothing to lessen the embarrassment. Where's the edit button when you need one?
